Mission Cycling in Rio

February 22nd, 2010 | No Comments »

Djalma, aka #3, sends us these great shots in his Mission Cycling away jersey, from his annual trip to Rio de Janeiro for Carnival.  Who is the dungeon master over his right shoulder?  If you remember pictures from last year, Djalma was in his speedo AND jersey on the beach.  #3 is always smiling when you see him.  He was loved a lot as a kid.  Namaste.

Bees Bein’ Strugglin’

I ran into a fellow cyclist this morning who was complaining how out of shape he is as compared to this time last year.  As he was going on and on about it (his lips were moving but I couldn’t hear what he was saying – kinda sounded like the voice on the other end of the phone on a Charlie Brown episode – Loud Murmuring), I began thinking about music and the post for today.  Hello Avalanche by the Austin, TX band The Octopus Project is a good motivator for riding this weekend.  There are no voices – just good beats to get you in the pedaling mood.  I would go on and on about it but I gotta get to HQ.  We’re working on a bunch of stuff for 2010.  I know, big deal.

Click to listen.  Or not.

Final Cross Race – Santa Rosa

February 15th, 2010 | 1 Comment »

Looks like some people got dirty this weekend.  In the final race of the season, DannO, The Professor and Jonathan had great results but the day belonged to Leila for getting 11th in her first cross race!  I helped my neighbor carry in their groceries for the first time.  It feels great doing something for the first time.  Way to go Leila!

Twin Peaks

This morning I woke up at 5am, in a cold sweat, from a dream where I lost my curling match.  You see, I was on the Olympic curling team and lost my team the chance to qualify for the medal round.   Needing a hug, a warm cup of tea and some time with my “feelings journal” I decided instead to get on the bike and punish myself for the loss.  I have issues.  Take It Easy.  I headed to climb Twin Peaks which is also a song off the album Astro Coast by the Florida band, Surfer Blood.  It’s got good guitar with catchy hooks (Lester Bang would like that line).  Nobody was on the road, it was misting and I was in the clouds – Floating Vibes.  This biking thing is pretty cool – Sometimes I think about what I would do without… It looks like great weather this weekend.  So if the sunny forecast is not enough to motivate you, throw on this album and you’ll be in the sexy spandex in no time.  Have a great or decent weekend.

Napa Cherry Pie Crit Race Report

February 9th, 2010 | No Comments »

[report from Joshua Taylor:]

Eugene, Jonathon, and I just finished the Napa Cherry Pie Criterium. Jonathon was racing the Cat 4 race, and Eugene and I the Cat 5.

Prior to the race I checked out the course, and heard it was a very technical crit, with several 90 degree turns, a 180 degree turn, a chicane, a descent, and an uphill finish. I’m not the best at holding wheels, or sprinting uphill, so my goal was to try and get a breakaway started to gain time on the pack in the turns.

There were a couple of attacks on the first two laps, but they were brought back immediately. Then after the pack bunched up on one of the straightaways I attacked. I kept hoping someone would bridge up to me and help, but it seemed they were content on chasing as a pack.

I stayed away for a lap, and was brought back on the windy section of the course. I ended up attacking 3 times with the same results. Staying away for a lap, and then getting caught. The course was perfect for a breakaway and I’m still not sure why nobody else came with me…..Our PRO mentor was getting annoyed at us and in our after race discussion said we wasted numerous opportunities to get a break started. Alas racing in the 5’s……

Eugene stayed in a good position and led the pack up the hill section several times. The race photo finish camera broke so they didn’t get any placings. He had to be in the top ten though.

We stuck around after our race to watch the Cat 4 race that Jonathon was in. Immediately there was a two man breakaway, and after they were caught there was a big crash. I think there were 4 crashes total, and one guy looked as if he may have broken his collarbone. On each lap when the pack came around we had noticed Jonathon moved up 5 to 10 positions. He was in a great position on the 4th to last lap, and got a flat. Tragic outcome, because under 5 laps to go doesn’t qualify for a pit stop. Looks like all that cross has him in good form!

Mission Cycling In Thailand (Big Deal)

Peter O spent a month in a hammock and one of the places he was very lazy was Koh Yao Noi.  Looks kind of fake, don’t you think?
