Early Bird Crit #5 Report: UPDATED

Today was the last of the Early Bird Criteriums, and the only one where they actually take placings. They split the field into two groups based on race number, but somehow Mission lucked out and 4 of us were in the second group. Alex, Michael, Eugene, and I were all together.

We seemed to work well together actually even if none of us knew what we were doing. Once again I spent way too much time on the front. So did Michael, but I’m beginning to think he is superhuman.

After spending too much time driving the pace, I was pretty cooked towards the end. Eugene did really well. He always seemed to be in the right spot at the right time, and got 2nd, or 3rd. Michael got 4th, I got 10th I think, and Alex was in 17th.

Everyone on Mission was riding really strong, and our PRO mentors, came up to me afterwards, and said Mission was doing really well in keeping the pace fast, and working together to keep good positions. That was pretty flattering, although I think any tactics we employed were more by accident.

I was racing with a gnarly cold which at first was going fine, I was even in a breakaway for a bit, but then a the final 2 laps I couldn't breath anymore. I had to fall back and decided to go for the Lantarne Rouge as a tribute to my fellow country man Kenny van Hummel. After the whole peloton passed me I made sure nobody was behind me. At the finish I pulled my shirt straight and put my finger up à la Contador. When I checked the results that night, it turned out I finished 2nd to last, we must have lapped someone. I failed at failing... |
